An example bookshop website on a phone

Sound familiar?

“We run an event most weeks, and getting people to hear about it is the hard part.”

Send the author, the date and the price, and it's on your site and your home page. Each one takes itself down the morning after.

“We've got a Bookshop.org page and an old website, and no time to keep either up to date.”

Keep your Bookshop.org shop; your site links to it. Hours, events, staff picks and what's just come in change by message, between customers.

“People turn up when we're shut, because the hours online are wrong.”

“Open till 7 on Thursdays now” or “back on Tuesday” by message, and your site is right before you've put the phone down.

“We'd love staff picks on the site. We never get round to it.”

A photo of the table and a line from whoever chose each book. Change it when the table changes.

“People don't realise we can order any book in print.”

“Any book in print, usually next day” on every page, with your number beside it.

Change it between customers

Send an author evening, a signed copy that's just come in, or this month's staff picks. You see a preview first, then tap Publish.

  • Nothing goes live until you say yes
  • Change your mind? “Put it back” undoes it
  • Your staff can update it too

Found on Google, and by AI assistants

People ask Google, and now ChatGPT and the rest, the same questions: open today, dog friendly, what's the menu. Your site answers them in the form each one reads.

  • The structured data Google reads on every page: hours, menu, prices, where to book
  • A sitemap and an llms.txt, the file AI assistants read, built from the same words
  • Change your hours by WhatsApp and the search engines get the change in the same publish
  • Your own domain name, with your town in the title

We cannot promise where you appear in a search. We can promise that what Google and the assistants read about you is right, and that it stays right.

Your email stays where it is. If it's with the company that hosts your website now, check with them before you cancel.

Questions

We sell through Bookshop.org. Does this replace it?
No. Your site links to your Bookshop.org shop for online orders. Your site is the place for hours, events, staff picks and what's just come in, which Bookshop.org doesn't show.
Can I add an event and have it disappear afterwards?
Yes. Send the title, the date, the time and the price. It shows on your events page and your home page, and takes itself down the morning after. A weekly storytime or a monthly book club stays put.
Can we show staff picks?
Yes. Send a photo of the table, or the titles and a line from whoever chose each one. Change it whenever the table changes.
Do I have to update it every day?
No. Change it when something changes: an event, a signed copy, new hours. The rest stays as it is.
I already have a website and a domain name. Can I keep the domain?
Yes. Your site starts on a free townmember.com address during the trial. When your subscription starts we connect your own domain, usually within the hour, and you can then cancel your old hosting.
Will my email keep working?
Yes. We only point your website at us; your email stays where it is. If your email is run by the same company as your old website, check with them before you cancel.
